Westwind is one of the Oregon Coast's most beautiful places…. It is a center for retreats, education and research with over 500 acres of wilderness beach, salmon-bearing rivers and upland forests and meadows.

Access is by our river boat insuring its solitude and wildness. Our main camp facilities are set into pine covered hills overlooking the Pacific and range from single cabins to a full camp that can accommodate 150 guests. more...

seasonal diary Welcome to the first edition of our WSG “eNewsletter”which we will be sending out quarterly from now on…We hope you enjoy it!

Well our tagline says it all: “On the wild edge of a continent” and WILD this winter has been at Westwind! In November we experienced 8 straight days of rain (over 26 inches total) with heavy winds coughing up huge rolls of kelp on the beach and the estuary and river flooded from one edge to the other, all the way to Otis.

Then came the big blows of late December with two 100 mph storms within 10 days of each other closing the Van Duzer corridor and creating power outage for 3 and a half days. One of them snapped off the flag pole at its base and we had to cut our way in and out of camp more than once with many, many trees coming down.

Surge waves of over 3 feet have been roaring up the river and broke all the mooring lines and cleats off the barges on Christmas Day. Despite all of this the lights are on, the computers humming and phones are busy ringing at the WSG office on site. The WSG board has been busy planning 2007 site and facility improvements, rental marketing and educational / sustainability programs, as well as welcoming two new members Donna Jordan and Kris Olson.

ENHANCE Recent improvements at Westwind have been keeping our staff and contractors BUSY:

Re-modeling the care-taker’s house and new WSG offices.

Moving the camp bell to a prominent place outside the lodge.

Installing a Westwind radio communication system
and a Tsunami alert frequency tied to the coastal
early warning system.

Beginning construction on trail improvements within
camp to improve safety and reduce erosion.

Designing and installing new signage on all borders
(and beach and river entries) as well as a brand new
gate on the administrative road.

playing rough

so well behaved
during an unbroken
stream of blue days
that I clean forgot
you could play so rough

on the last
hot day of October
your light was
ready to spill over the edge
into darkness
the thin gray horizon
hiding winter
just
out of sight

then you came in swinging
6 straight days
of house rocking punches
10 inches of
life giving liquid
falling in the span
of one mornings cup of coffee to the next
the river gorged
and pushed out of its banks
by the advancing tide
sometimes
you just don’t know
when to quit

as I walk
more evidence
of your mood
lies strewn across the road
in piles
of living matter
having delivered
on their promise
that took
all of the days of spring and summer
to keep

as i sit
writing this
the thud
of the surf
calls me to walk
outside
drawn
by the
pull of
you and your
knee high foam
and broken trees
and the rearing
flagrant
creaming
ladder of waves
that you make from
six thousand miles of sea
and the thin membrane of land
under my feet

and in all of this
you say
it is easy to walk
in the high meadows of summer
when the light is low in the West
and the world holds still

but to really
know me
you say
i want you here
in THIS
humbled by cold
salt rimmed eyes
staring into the west
at me
dressed in grey
coming at you

playing
rough
